Torx is a trademarked type of screw drive characterized by a 6-point star-shaped pattern. A popular generic name for the drive is star, as in star keys, star screwdriver, or star bits. They are used on 6 lobed Torx screws. Allen and star heads are different and require different tools. Many of the new adventure motorcycles use a significant amount of Torx head fasteners. Below you can see an example of star head fasteners being used on this front brake caliper master cylinder reservior cover.

Torx head screws resist cam-out better than Phillips head or slot head screws. Phillips drivers have a tendency to cam out under excessive torque. The 6 lobe design has been listed as a feature preventing damage to both the screw-head and driver. The Torx 6 lobe design allows for a higher torque to be exerted than a similarly sized conventional hex socket head screw as well

As with hex keys, it is also nice to have a set of hex key sockets bits. This will allow you to use your ratchet for more leverage. If you want to spend even more money, a set of long reach star bit sockets is a nice set of tools to have.
